Looking back… highlights from this spring

Awesome Art in Motion on stage

On June 2nd, the 12 members of Awesome Art in Motion put on an amazing show of original choreography at the Shea Theater! For those of you who missed the show, check out this Dance Film telling the story of Stella Luna the bat (screened at the opening of the show).

Dance at the Gill Elementary School

In May GFCM had the pleasure of leading a series of creative movement classes in both the kindergarten and 3rd grade classrooms at the Gill Elementary school. On June 1st, we shared some of our dances at the final all-school meeting of the year. Thanks to the Gill Cultural Council for their partial funding of this program and to the teachers and admin of the school for their support of this program!

Cross-Generational Community Dance

On May 20th, members of Awesome Art and Motion and their families joined at least 20 elderly residents of the Charlene Manor assisted living home for a community dance class! After warming up our bodies, children, parents and elders shared stories of loved ones, created short dances based on gesture and performed them for each other. We look forward to facilitating more cross-generational dance opportunities in the future!

The Brick House Community Resource Center
The studio I’ve come to call my dancing home over the past nine years is a part of a much bigger project here in Turners Falls: The Brick House Community Resource Center. In addition to their function as a vibrant community center through the space rental program, The Brick House also offers extensive Youth Programming for teens ages 11-18 to explore the arts and social justice, as well as providing Parent and Family Services which help families access basic needs.

The Brick House community space rental program has not only provided us with a beautiful place to dance for 9 years, it has also made it possible for Great Falls Creative Movement to offer a sliding scale admissions fee for all of our classes and programs. As a beneficiary AND supporter of The Brick House, I am excited to find more ways Great Falls Creative Movement can contribute to and overlap with the larger Brick House Community. Whether your kids have taken classes in The Movement Studio, come to dance parties, performances or summer camps, YOU are a part of the Brick House Community! Let’s make those connections stronger by learning, contributing and participating in the coming year.

Stay tuned for local community events such as youth art shows, open mic events, free community meals, and more!

The second residency will be at the Village School in Royalston MA, where we will be returning for the second year in a row to continue to work with students from pre-K through sixth grade and their classroom teachers on ways to bring movement into all aspects of the classroom year-round. Both residencies will end with school-wide demonstrations and, of course, a dance party!

Fun and Affordable dance classes for everyone!

Great Falls Creative Movement was founded by dance teacher Anna Hendricks  in January of ’09 and offers creative movement classes in Franklin County, MA and Windham County VT.

Great Falls Creative Movement (GFCM) offers private classes during the school year at the The Brick House Community Resource Center in Turners Falls, as well as a week long creative dance camp each August at the same location. This year GFCM added a new program, a children’s dance company called “Awesome Art in Motion”. The company, made up of GFCM students ages five and older, work collaboratively with Anna to create performance pieces which have been performed through the First Thursdays program of Riverculture in Turners Falls, as well as in the great outdoors.

In addition to programming at The Brick House, this year Great Falls Creative Movement provided regular movement classes at The Giving Tree Pre-School, The Academy of Early Learning in Greenfield, the Hampshire Franklin Children’s Day Care Center in Leverett, the Enchanted Forest After school program at the Swift River school in Wendell, and at the SoBo studio in Brattleboro VT.  Great Falls Creative Movement has been a cultural council grant recipient in the towns of Montague, Erving, Leverett, Shuttesbury, Wendell, and New Salem.

PHILOSOPHY:
Great Falls Creative Movement teach dancers young and old to find new and creative ways to express themselves through movement while building physical confidence and skill.  Fostering a love of movement and dance is our number one goal.  Dancers discover for themselves their own ranges of movement: How BIG they can move and how small; how fast and how slow.  The process of self-discovery is satisfying! Classes help foster strong self-image, self-awareness and self-direction and offer the unique opportunity to engage mind, body and spirit at the same time.
